The North Face Surge Backpack - Green - Past Season is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 490.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the most comfortable urban backpacks on the market The bag is great I'm mostly using it for office and city trips. Very all-around and versatile in urban environment. I tried hiking with it, but it's not its best use obviously due to bigger weight etc. The main advantages are excellent padding almost everywhere including the laptop/tablet compartments and the small front pocket which can be used for cellphone or glasses for example. The bottle side pockets are not so large, therefore, some wider containers might not fit or not stay firmly in place during activity. All the rest is kind of perfect for me. Maybe a waterproof version could be an improvement, but then it would be in a different price range...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Backpack! overall this bag is awesome. I bought it for school as the bag I had before was too small. In this bag im able to fit my laptop and all the books for my 4 college classes (3 small books, 4 full sized books). The pocket for the tablet works great, however i use it for a portable battery pack. The fleece pocket for my sunglasses work great and the two vertical pockets work great for my phone charger, calculator, and etc. Would definitely recommend this backpack to others. When it comes to hiking this bag is also great. I have plenty of room for water and my camera bag fits in this bag as well. The chest strap and waist strap work great as support while on long hikes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tennis Player with the "BACKPACK"! My grandson, high school junior received this as a gift...a high-achiever, tennis player and extremely detailed ...never too organized, started his first day back to classes feeling prepared as he would say.. "strutting my new SURGE"! He left more confident knowing this backpack would enable him to locate all his school items without having to fumble around during instructional class time. Could not stop thanking me enough as he explained how important this school year is and now with the "SURGE"... "comfort" and "organization" with no time wasted. More time to concentrate on school work and tennis! Thank you North Face...we have the "SURGE"!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great quality but flawed in design and uncomfortable First of all this is a very well made pack but for me its base weight is too heavy and it's designed so that the shoulders bear all of the weight. The laptop compartment is to tight for anything but the slimmest laptops. The fleece lining is nice and the pockets are well thought out. However the waist strap is USELESS. to have it around the waist the pack sits to low (i'm 5'10") and it takes no weight of your shoulders at all. This pack is defiantly not designed to be worn for long periods of time but would be a great school bag or for carrying lap top and documents on planes, trains etc but not good value for money for this purpose. Cant recommend for any outdoor activity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from When In Doubt, "Surge" It Out When I first started looking at backpacks I was not certain what to get. I knew I wanted to get a high quality bag, but didn't want to waste money doing so. This bag not only looks awesome, it accommodates all the needs of a student, or even general needs such as transporting office materials from work to home. This bag is worth the money; I love it. It has tons of pockets to keep organized, and some are super soft (like a fleece)! There is a lot of room, however, I am planning on it gaining more space as it gets broken in. I believe this bag is an investment, because I don't plan on buying another for quite some time!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatest backpack ever! This pack is awesome. I bought it to travel with and use in place of a messenger bag. The laptop compartment is really nice to have. The laptop compartment also pairs well with the camelback water delivery system. The bag is roomy and has a lot of pockets for organization. When packed full the backpack remains extremely comfortable while wearing. There is even a built in whistle on one of the straps incase you need to get someone's attention while hiking. I have had the same Northface backpack for over 12 years. It finally started fall apart and I chose this pack as it's replacement. You will not be disappointed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One of most comfortable backpacks I've owned! Pros: - Very comfortable (owned more than 10 backpacks) - Lightweight, great hiking pack - Waist clip - Built in Whistle - Extra padding and back ventilation - TSA friend laptop pocket - Fleeced lined pocket for phones (big enough to fit my iPhone 6 Plus) Cons: - Wish there was more internal pockets. - Better fabric (1000D). - Tough to easily access items when pack is stuffed since it doesn't open all the way (Clam style) - Side clips get in the way when trying to open the main and small compartments. - Laptop compartment may not fit thicker sized laptops.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Only one reason I'm not buying again I used my my Surge for about a year before it was unfortunately stolen. I loved it, very durable and excellent internal organization. I could put my huge gaming laptop and by giant calculus textbook in there along with all my school supplies without breaking my back- super comfy and nice suspension. The only flaw in the design is where the compression straps attach, in FRONT of the laptop compartment. When you have a heavy load and cinch it down tight, all that force pulls against the sides of your laptop instead of on the rigid pack panel. Over time, this caused damage to my laptop, messing up the screen and breaking the case. Now I have to deal with a few lines of dead pixels on my nice gaming machine, which is a huge bummer. I'll be replacing my backpack with the Router instead of the Surge for the sole reason that the compression strap attaches BEHIND the laptop compartment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The most SEXY backpack I've ever owned! I'm using the backpack for school right now. It works great for a few textbooks, but more than 3 or 4, won't work. I've used it for day travel a couple of times, and it has worked great. The straps are amazing for a backpack, I've only really seen straps that good on a more rucksack type of backpack. The laptop area is very nice and padded on all sides, including bottom! It can hold a lot of weight without being uncomfortable. Overall it is just a very sexy backpack, that is the reason I bought it. The extra colors are amazing and I couldn't find them on any other backpack!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved my Back Honestly got this bag for school, but I have ended up taken it back country snowboarding, hiking, camping, across the U.S, and even on my hunting, and fishing trips. Now I never write reviews for things however, I definitely owe it to the bag for saving the skin off my back, and shoulder when I got hit by a car on my motorcycle last October! Bag got torn up a bit, on back left side where the thinner material is, but not enough to throw it away. Still 100% functional, and I use it everyday. It's a great reminder to me how well North Face products are made. I would definitely recommend this bag to someone interested in buying it. For sizing info if you're interested... I am a 5'11, 160 lbs male, and it fits great. Extremely comfortable, and not to bad with a heavier load, or while jogging. Thanks!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A Significant Downgrade This bag is much worse than its predecessor, the Surge 2. Initially, I would like to say that the bag is very well-built and seems like it would last a long time. The fleece pockets are nice quality, and the laptop sleeve is soft and protective, which is very important. The bag's largest and crucial flaw is that the shoulder straps are very uncomfortable. At first glance, they seem fine. However, there is stiff mesh "padding" that goes around the strap at the neck area, and it is very abrasive and painful to wear. The whole strap and back of the bag area is stiff, and the straps simply scrap your neck and are not comfortable. I have tried many bags, and this is simply not tolerable. I asked my family members to try the bag as well, and we unanimously decided that the bag isn't comfortable and that the straps are a serious design flaw. I am a college student, and I was sincerely wanting to like the bag. It looks great, and has all of the features that I need. However, it simply is not comfortable. I purchased the bag and kept it for a week. I wanted it to "break in" in hopes that it would be more comfortable with time, but it simply wasn't. I returned the bag to purchase the Surge 2 on a popular bookbag website for nearly $50 less than this bag. The Surge 2 is much nicer for many reason, but mostly because the comfort is far superior to the new bag. As an added bonus (if you have read this far), the older Surge 2 has a place for storing the waist straps, while the new bag has no storage for the straps and the must instead dangle at your hips. Do yourself a favor and purchase the older bag. It's much cheaper, and far more comfortable. You won't regret your decision.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great features but... So here's the deal. I've had this backpack for less than a year, and I want to love it because it sounds so great on paper. Lots of organizational pockets, stylish design, TSA layout laptop sleeve (a serious perk), and a large capacity. HOWEVER. The straps and back on this backpack are so incredibly uncomfortable. I assume the straps are attached high up on the back panel in order to provide the most support possible, but that means it digs in constantly to your shoulders, and sticks out further than other backpacks I've owned. Not to mention the back wall is hard as a rock, making it painful to take on and off. On top of that, because the internal compartments are much taller than they are wide, it's actually fairly difficult to fit a good amount of books/change of clothes in here, because you are so limited width wise. Especially if you want to utilize the front organizational pockets, which are wonderful, but once you put things in them it reduces what large items you can actually add to the backpack. My guess is that for those who really use this pack for long hiking purposes it works well, but if you're looking for a school friendly backpack this is not the one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall a great product In general, this is a great bookbag. It has a relatively large capacity and is nicely divided and organized. I originally got this bookbag because my previous one didnt have much lumbar support. This one looked like it could give me that support i needed. Its more than I''ll ever need really but it helps that this bookbag is very versatyle - itd be appropriate for amost all occasions: travelling, hiking, commuting, etc. The only thing i do not like about this backpack is how the waist straps dangles. In an older model of the recon, they had little sleeves for which you can slide the waist straps in. I do not see why they could not incorporate something like this as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Soooo Sick Off the Richter!! Got a Surge backpack 2 years ago and just swooped in on the updated version. Really light with big comfy straps and some super engineered back padding. Feels great on. Way better pocket system then the last one. 1 easy access big fuzzy pocket right on top for the shades. Another easy zip tablet pocket on the front and then a super secure fleece padded laptop pocket on the inside. Also has a luggage type handle on the front that makes it easy to carry like a duffle. Solid day to day back and big enough to load up for a weekend adventure. Plenty of inside storage pockets but not so many that I'm digging around in it forever. Wetsuit fits in no problem. Found a spot for my emergency rope. Style lines are way better and the black/red/grey is pretty rad looking. Stoked on this one!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is Actually a Customer Service Review I purchased the Surge backpack online for my son for school. We have had them before and they are excellent backpacks. However, the one we received had a faulty zipper, which we discovered when we tried to zip it shut the first day of school. I didn't have any of the info that came with the bag, not even the order number. I called Customer Service. They looked up my order by my name, sent me a FedEx mailing label and put a new one in the mail within one day. The new backpack arrived within a week, and has the usual NF quality. Easiest exchange I have EVER made.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for traveling This is a great medium-sized backpack for a weekend trip, or when you need to carry a ton of stuff in addition to your main luggage. Plenty of space and organization for what you need. Doesn't seem too heavy to me based on what other reviews have said (I prefer it to be heavy over light if it means the backpack lasts longer). The 2 things that I love most about traveling with this pack which sets it apart from the others that North Face offers: The small front top compartment -- perfect for when I need to stash my wallet/phone/watch/sunglasses when going through security or storing at night. And the handle on the back of the pack -- I initially didn't like the look of this, but have grown to love it. Great for picking up the pack when it's been lying down, or stacking it on top of something. It prevents you from having to swing the bottom up when fitting it into a tighter space. Didn't think I would use it at all but actually use it almost everytime that I take the bag somewhere.
