"My personal philosophy is that I enjoy life more if I’m surrounded by things that I built myself. I understand my surroundings and I connect better with my environment." Those are the words of Osprey founder Mike Pfotenhauer who built his first backpack in his home state of Oregon at the age of 16. In the 40 years since, Mike has never stopped innovating.
Since Osprey was founded in 1974, every single product design bearing the Osprey name has passed through the hands of owner and founder Mike Pfotenhauer, undergoing relentless scrutiny. From stitching the first lines of custom-fitted packs to meticulously designing innovative products with intuitive features, Mike has been the unbreakable thread that makes Osprey a company like no other.
Custom fit backpacks are Osprey’s legacy. Our expertise lies in designing backpacks that fit every shape, size and gender. Almost 90% of Osprey packs are available in multiple sizes to fit a range of torso lengths. Additionally, many styles have interchangeable or adjustable harnesses and hipbelts to further customize fit.
A well-designed suspension system effectively spreads and transitions the loads across the entire body to the harness and hipbelt. With different material and stay options we can make sure each individual pack has the right load carry for its intended use. There are 4 distinct suspension systems that Osprey builds intended to achieve a particular task such as keeping pack weight close to the torso, comfort, ventilation and load balance.
Osprey is proud of the strides we have made to lessen our impact upon the planet and tread lightly. Our commitment to be an outdoor industry leader in sustainability, environmental and social issues is taken seriously, tempered by an honest realization that, though we have accomplished much, there is still much more to be done.
